First staged in 1956 as a three"day tour to mark Invercargill’s centenary celebrations, the Tour of Southland has since gained momentum with New Zealand’s champion cyclists eager to count the grueling event among their accomplishments. Testament to its standing on the global stage, the tour was awarded UCI status in 2002 and became a registered 2.2 UCI International Tour.
